Harlingen H. S. is a Texas UIL 6A high school consisting of five-six performing concert ensembles: Honors Band, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, JV Winds, 9th Grade Navy Band and Cadet Band. Concert bands rehearse on a daily basis during four different class periods and perform year-round. Auditions are held for concert bands in May of each year. All bands meet during summer training camps held in late July. Individual instrumental sectionals are held throughout the year. Harlingen High School band directors also provide private lessons for students in the band year round. The concert bands travel across the region to participate in various Pre-UIL competitions and have earned consistent first divisions at such events. Students also developed and host the annual Arroyo Pre-UIL concert contest held in Harlingen, which began in 1997. The Honors, Wind Symphony, Symphonic, and 2 more Concert bands have earned Sweepstakes awards consistently through the years. All bands perform throughout the community for different occasions including Christmas Elementary School concerts, Christmas parades, Veterans Day concerts, graduation ceremonies, benefit concerts, Spring concerts, and various school functions. The concert bands have also visited and competed in the New York Music Festival in 1999 where they each received straight first division ratings, first place in their class, and the Honors Band won the title of Grand Champion. The band also took a trip to Hollywood in the Spring of 2002 and visited Universal Studios, Disney's California Adventure Park, and Disney Land. During their visit to California each of the two Concert Bands and the Jazz Band placed first in their respective divisions at the Heritage Music Festival held in Anaheim. The Honors Band won Grand Champion of the festival. In the Spring of 2003, the bands also participated in the Dallas D. C. Music Festival where each band received 1st Divisions and placed first in each of their respective classes. Also, the Honors Band won Grand Champion of the festival.
